Hinge has been the most cautious of the big apps about generative AI, and also one of the busiest. Since January 2025 it has shipped AI coaching for prompts and first messages, a machine-learning photo sorter, a rebuilt recommendation engine and, in testing, a feature that guesses traits about you from your profile.
Its stated principles for these tools are transparency, authenticity and equity, per a November 2025 Hinge post. Its recurring promise is that the AI suggests and never writes. Here is how each piece works, based on Hinge’s newsroom and help center, checked 2026-11-06.
The matching side
The recommendation system
Every profile in your Discover feed is chosen by an algorithm. Hinge’s help center says Discover shows people based on mutual interest, meaning you fit their preferences and they fit yours. Its page on automated decision-making lists the inputs: age, gender, location, preferences, who you like, skip and match with, and even who you exchange phone numbers with.
In 2025 Hinge says it rebuilt this system using deep learning to better predict mutual compatibility, and credits the change with a double-digit increase in matches. That figure is the company’s own.
Most Compatible
Once a day, Hinge tries to show one Most Compatible recommendation at the top of Discover. The help article says it is based on mutual preferences, recent activity and shared patterns in who you and others tend to like. It expires after 24 hours. When it launched in 2018, it was reported as built on the Gale-Shapley matching algorithm; the details, and what’s confirmed versus guessed, are in how the Hinge algorithm works.
In Your Orbit (test)
The newest and most interesting. Every few days, you see three blurred profiles, each labeled with something you might share: a hometown, a college town, a zodiac pairing, a date idea you both picked or a “custom trait.” You reveal one.
Custom traits are the AI part. Hinge infers interests and lifestyle details, such as being a dog lover or liking live music, from your profile content. The help page says Hinge won’t infer body type, race or ethnicity, religion, age, sexual identity or gender identity, and that traits may be inaccurate.
Turn it off: hide single traits inside In Your Orbit, or switch off Custom Traits entirely in Account Settings. Hinge says it is being tested with select daters, so you may not have it.
The profile side
Prompt Feedback
Launched 2025-01-15 as Hinge’s first AI-powered coaching feature. When you review your profile, it rates up to three prompt answers as “Great Answer,” “Try a Small Change” or “Go a Little Deeper.” The feedback is private.
What it actually does: judges detail and specificity. Hinge’s launch post says it does not tell you what to say or suggest wording. Hinge’s later post says early versions sometimes over-explained or softened jokes, and that it was tuned to hold back on humor and cultural references.
What to watch: if you write dry, short answers on purpose, the nudges will push against your style. That’s allowed; you can ignore them.
Top Photo
Turn on Top Photo and Hinge uses a machine-learning model to predict which of your photos is most likely to get a Like, then puts it first. Your profile order for others may differ from what you see in Edit Profile. The help page says it doesn’t process facial geometry or biometric data.
Turn it off: the Top Photo toggle in Edit Profile.
The messaging side
Convo Starters
Launched in the U.S. on 2025-12-08 and expanded to the UK on 2026-02-23. When you tap Like on a photo or prompt, up to three tips appear, such as “ask about their favorite restaurant.” After you match, three to six tips may appear near the message bar until someone sends a first message.
Data: Hinge’s help page says it sends public prompt responses, photos and pronouns to OpenAI, which acts as a processor, cannot train on the data and deletes it within 30 days. It doesn’t analyze facial geometry, biometric data or private messages. Selfies, group photos, voice, video and poll prompts and sensitive topics are skipped.
Turn it off: in settings. Opting out also stops tips being generated from your profile for other people.
AI comment filtering
Hinge’s Comment Filter lets you block words, phrases or emojis from incoming likes. In March 2025 Hinge added AI-powered filtering on top of your personal list, per its 2025 recap.
Friend’s Take
Not an AI feature on the surface, but it feeds Hinge’s systems. Friend’s Take lets you send a link to friends, family or coworkers, who write a short “take” about you in text, voice, video or photo form. You review each one and choose whether it goes on your profile; you can’t edit them. Hinge’s help page says links last 72 hours or 10 submissions, and that data from the feature may be used to improve it, including through machine learning. It’s a human answer to the same problem AI coaching tries to solve: profiles that undersell people.
What Hinge’s AI doesn’t do
It doesn’t write messages, rewrite your prompts or generate photos. It doesn’t read your chats for Convo Starters. And Hinge doesn’t allow outside tools to automate your account: its help center says autoswipers, bots and scrapers can get accounts banned.
How these features compare with Tinder’s and Bumble’s is laid out in Hinge vs Tinder vs Bumble AI features compared. If you are weighing Hinge against an AI-first matchmaker, see Amata vs Hinge.
Quick answers
Does Hinge use AI to match people? Yes. Its recommendation system uses machine learning, including deep learning since a 2025 rebuild. What it doesn’t do is let a chatbot pick your dates through conversation, the way Bumble’s pilot and startups like Amata do.
Is any of this paid? None of the AI features above are listed as subscriber-only on Hinge’s help pages (checked 2026-11-06). Hinge+ and HingeX unlock other features, such as sorting by the Signals badge.
Can other daters see your Prompt Feedback? No. Hinge says it is private.
